Why AI replies get repetitive or short (and how to fix it)

Updated

AI replies get repetitive when a phrase or sentence structure appears a few times and the model keeps copying it. They get short when your own messages are short. Break loops early, bring in something new, and write the kind of message you want back.

Why it happens

How to break a repetition loop

  1. Redo or edit the first reply that repeats something. Two or three repeats in a row are much harder to undo.
  2. Bring in something new: an event, a character, a place, or a question.
  3. Don’t repeat the character’s phrases back to them, because echoing reinforces the loop.
  4. Vary your own messages. If every message you write has the same shape, the replies will too.
  5. Remove catchphrases and repeated words from the character’s definition and sample lines.
  6. Change the scene with a time skip or a new location. See how to steer an AI story.
  7. If a very long thread keeps looping, start a new chapter with a summary.

How to get longer replies

  1. Write the kind of message you want back. Give your turn an action, a line of dialogue, or a detail the character can react to.
  2. Ask open questions, such as “What happened in the war?” A yes-or-no question usually gets a one-word answer.
  3. Give the character something to do as well as something to answer.
  4. Check the opening. If the first message is short, the whole story tends to stay short. See how to write a great opening scene.
