AI Dungeon alternatives for text adventures and RPGs

Updated

The main AI Dungeon alternatives in 2026 are Voyage, Friends & Fables, Hidden Door, and NovelAI. Voyage comes from AI Dungeon’s own developer and adds RPG systems and multiplayer, and Friends & Fables runs campaigns based on Dungeons & Dragons rules. Hidden Door tells guided stories in worlds you already know, and NovelAI gives you close control over the writing. Lunelle AI, our app, is built for long, character-driven stories on a phone. AI Roguelite is a one-time purchase on Steam, and KoboldCpp runs on your own computer.

We make Lunelle AI, one of the apps on this list. Every other app is described from its own website, help center, or store listing, or from press coverage, and the sources are listed at the end. Prices are in US dollars. Prices and features change often, so the details here are as of October 24, 2026.

What changed at AI Dungeon in 2025 and 2026

In November 2025, Latitude, the company behind AI Dungeon, stopped offering the $9.99 Adventurer plan to new subscribers, so the cheapest paid plan is now Journey at $14.99 a month. The free plan has a context of 4,000 tokens, the amount of recent story the AI reads before each reply. Journey has 8,000, Legend ($29.99) has 16,000, and Mythic ($49.99) has 32,000.

In August 2026, Latitude opened Voyage, a second platform built as an RPG, to everyone. Latitude says AI roleplay apps that rely on a single AI model “struggle when asked to simulate an actual world over a long time horizon,” and Voyage adds a World Engine to keep track of that world.

AI Dungeon still has its own memory tools: a Memory Bank of automatically summarized events (25 memories on the free plan, up to 800 on the top plan), Plot Essentials for key facts, and Story Cards that are added to the context when a name or place comes up. It also supports multiplayer and community scenarios.

What to look for in an alternative

The apps below differ mainly in game rules, memory, and price. Some add dice rolls, stats, inventory, and quests to the story, and others leave everything to the narration, as AI Dungeon does. To remember a long adventure, an app can use a larger context window, summaries of earlier events, or lorebook entries like Story Cards. You pay by subscription, with credits, once, or by running the AI on your own hardware. Our guide to why AI characters forget explains how the memory pieces fit together.

Lunelle AI

Lunelle AI is our app: interactive fiction for iOS and Android, built for long stories. You play in your own words, as in AI Dungeon, and the stories center on characters. They remember events, choices, and how relationships in the story have changed, across sessions, and they keep the same personality and facts over long plays. Several characters can share a scene and react to you and to each other.

You can play the curated cast or adventures that other players shared, or create characters and whole adventures by describing them to the creator in a chat. AI image generation is built in, and the app is available in 16 languages. Lunelle AI is text only and single-player, with no web version. It is free to download, with an optional Unlimited Messages subscription from $14.99 a month.

Pick it if the characters matter most to you and you mostly play on your phone.

Voyage

Voyage is Latitude’s second platform after AI Dungeon. It opened to everyone on iOS, Android, and the web on August 26, 2026, as an open beta. Voyage is built as an RPG: its World Engine tracks characters, inventory, relationships, and consequences, and the AI narrates what happens.

You can play solo, join a multiplayer game, or guide one in DM Mode. Voyage Creator Studio lets you build a world by describing it in a conversation and then share it with other players.

Solo play starts with a free balance of Usage, and public multiplayer and scenarios are free. Paid Voyage Unlimited plans give unlimited core play plus a Usage pool for premium features, and they include the AI Dungeon benefits of the same tier, except the monthly Credits.

Pick it if you like AI Dungeon but want quests, inventory, and consequences that the game keeps track of, or want to play with friends.

Friends & Fables

Friends & Fables runs campaigns inspired by Dungeons & Dragons, with an AI game master called Franz. Combat is turn-based and follows D&D 5e rules, with battlemaps, spells, and monsters. World-building tools cover maps, lore, quests, and characters, and you can play worlds that other players have published.

Before each reply, Franz searches the campaign’s long-term memories, lore, and characters and pulls the relevant parts into a Working Context, which you can see and edit. Separate steps keep your stats, inventory, location, and quest progress up to date.

Campaigns hold 3 players on the free plan and up to 6 on the top plan, and friends can join for free. It runs in the browser on desktop, tablet, and phone. The free plan includes up to 25 turns a day, where a turn is one reply from Franz. Paid plans cost $19.95, $29.95, or $39.95 a month and add unlimited standard turns, text to speech, and larger parties.

Pick it if you want a D&D-style campaign with rules, combat, and a party of friends.

Hidden Door

Hidden Door lets you play stories in classic and licensed worlds, such as Dracula’s castle and Oz. You create a character and play with a narrator that works like a game master. Dice rolls behind the scenes decide whether some actions succeed, and the narrator keeps you within the logic of the world. The Verge’s reviewer found that, unlike a general chatbot, it would not let them write their way to an instant win. You collect cards for characters and places to look back on as the story goes.

Playing is free and unlimited across the whole catalog. A paid plan lets you build and share your own worlds with Atlas, a world builder added in May 2026. Hidden Door runs in the browser.

Pick it if you want a guided story in a world you already know.

NovelAI

NovelAI, made by Anlatan, is a web app for writing fiction with an AI, and it has a Text Adventure mode. You type an action with Do or a line of dialogue with Say, and the AI continues the story. You can start from a blank page or from a pre-made Text Adventure scenario, and you can edit any part of the story directly.

Memory, the Author’s Note, and the Lorebook give you close control over what the AI keeps in mind, much like AI Dungeon’s Plot Essentials, Author’s Note, and Story Cards. The Opus plan ($25 a month) has the largest context, 28,672 tokens. Tablet ($10) and Scroll ($15) have smaller ones, and a free trial includes 50 text generations.

Pick it if you like keeping notes on your world and editing the story as you go.

DreamGen

DreamGen is a web app for roleplay and story writing. Each scenario has a Scenario Codex, a story bible for the plot, setting, characters, and locations, and the AI plays every character in the cast while you play your own. Context is 5,000 tokens on Starter, 15,000 on Advanced, and 30,000 on Pro.

There is a free plan with monthly credits, and paid plans start at $7.83 a month. DreamGen has no iOS or Android app, but the site works in a phone browser.

Pick it if your adventure has a large cast or a detailed world you want to keep consistent.

Everweave

Everweave, made by Endgame Studio, is a text RPG with an AI Dungeon Master, inspired by tabletop roleplaying games. You pick a class such as fighter, paladin, or rogue, roll dice, and learn new abilities as you go. The story follows your choices: the App Store listing suggests leading an army or settling down as an innkeeper. It runs on iOS, Android, and the web, and the studio says the game is at an early stage.

Everweave is free to download, with in-app purchases. It has 4.3 stars from about 8,700 ratings on the US App Store.

Pick it if you want a D&D-style adventure on your phone.

AI Roguelite

AI Roguelite, by solo developer Max Loh, is a text RPG on Steam in which an AI model generates every location, character, enemy, item, crafting recipe, and combat result. Whether an action works depends on how plausible it is and on a dice roll against your stats and skills, and you can travel with up to four party members. Its Steam page pitches it to players who found that AI Dungeon didn’t feel like a game.

It costs $14.99 for Windows and works out of the box with a free cloud AI model, or you can connect a paid or local model. Its Steam reviews are Very Positive, with 82% of 611 reviews positive.

Pick it if you want stats and dice and would rather pay once than subscribe.

Running it yourself: KoboldCpp and SillyTavern

KoboldCpp is free, open-source software that runs AI models on your own computer, on Windows, Mac, or Linux. Its built-in interface, KoboldAI Lite, has an Adventure Mode for interactive fiction and text RPGs, and a Context panel for memory, world info, and an author’s note. You choose the model, and how much of the story the AI can read at once depends on the context size your hardware can handle.

SillyTavern is another free interface, built more for chats and group scenes with characters. It can connect to KoboldCpp or to paid AI services. Both take some technical setup.

Pick it if you want full control over the model and the memory tools, and don’t mind configuring them.

ChatGPT or Claude as a game master

A general chatbot can run a text adventure too. For a long campaign, use a project. A ChatGPT project keeps chats, files, and instructions in one place, so you can store the world, the rules, and a running summary of the story. In Claude, anything you add to a project’s knowledge or instructions is used in every chat in that project, and free accounts can create up to five projects.

General chatbots tend to go along with what you write. When a reviewer at The Verge gave their character an unbeatable magic bow in a ChatGPT story, ChatGPT let them defeat every vampire on Earth with it. Set the rules in the project instructions and hold the story to them yourself. Our guide to using ChatGPT or Claude as a D&D dungeon master shows how, with a game master prompt you can copy.

Free and mobile options

Perchance’s AI RPG runs in the browser and is free and unlimited, with no sign-up. On phones, AI Game Master - Dungeon RPG (4.7 stars from about 5,700 ratings on the US App Store) and FableAI (4.5 stars from about 1,500) play like AI Dungeon: you type what your character does, and the narrator writes what happens next. Both are on iOS and Android. Their store listings say little about how they keep track of a long story.

If you also use Character.AI, see our list of apps like Character.AI for long stories, or compare Lunelle AI and AI Dungeon side by side.
